What moves on this lane

The West is a truckload market from St. Louis. Long lanes mean we are candid about when reuse stops making economic sense, and we will say so rather than quote a number that only works on paper.

Utah is a two-way lane for us wherever the schedule lines up: graded stock out, recovered corrugated back. That reverse load is the cheapest freight either side will ever buy and the lowest-carbon mile in the loop.

  • Electronics
  • Beverage
  • Apparel & returns
  • Aerospace supply

Grading does not change by distance

This is worth stating plainly, because it is the question we get asked most on long lanes. Every container shipped to Utah is graded by hand at the same station, against the same written four-point scale, by the same people. There is no “long-haul grade” and no quiet downgrade to absorb freight cost.

What does change with distance is which mode makes sense, and we quote that honestly — including the cases where we think you should buy locally instead.

Services available in UT
  • Buying graded stock — Used and reconditioned containers photographed before you commit, quoted delivered.
  • Selling us your boxes — Send a photograph of the stack. We price by grade and volume and pay on pickup.
  • Reconditioning — Flap splices, patch panels, re-scoring and re-facing at our bench, then re-graded.
  • Freight & logistics — Knocked down, banded and cube-checked so you are not paying to move air.
  • Box management — A managed container pool held under your name, collected, graded and re-issued.

Work the numbers first

Box Studio gives you the cube, the pallet fit and the trailer count for any size, which is the information that actually decides your delivered price on this lane.

Questions

Shipping to Utah.

What is the minimum order for Utah?

Practically, a partial truckload. One pallet is possible but the freight share makes it poor value, and we would rather tell you that than take the order. A standing order released from our yard is usually the better answer.

How long does delivery take?

Quote within one business day, delivery typically 5 – 9 days once released. Modes available on this lane: full truckload only.

Will you collect used boxes from Utah?

On truckload volumes, yes. Below that the collection freight usually exceeds the material value, and we will say so. Photograph the stack and we will run both numbers for you.

Do you offer a managed container pool here?

Yes. Pool stock is held under your name in our yard, collected, graded within 24 hours of arrival, repaired at the bench and re-issued against your releases. In Utah that usually runs on a monthly or quarterly cadence depending on your cycle time.

Can we visit before committing?

Customers are welcome on the grading floor Monday to Thursday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Central. Bring safety shoes. If a visit is impractical at this distance, we photograph every lot before you commit instead.

Is used board suitable for food contact here?

No used corrugated container is suitable for direct food contact, in any state. Lined containers with FDA-compliant poly or foil liners are standard across produce and ingredients, and we supply the liners with supplier letters of guarantee.

Pricing

Six things move the number, and volume is only the fourth.

Used box pricing confuses people because the obvious lever — how many you want — is among the weakest of the six. Spread is the gap between best and worst case on our own quote data.

Ten conversions we use every day.

None of these are difficult. All of them are regularly got wrong, usually by a factor of 1,728.

Freight class

Why empty packaging rates so badly.

LTL pricing keys off density. Knocked-down corrugated weighs almost nothing and occupies a full pallet position, so it lands near the expensive end of a scale designed around weight.

Note the two rows that matter here: knocked-down board is class 150 – 250, erected containers are class 300 – 400. That gap is the entire argument for banding everything flat.
